Eventually the apartments above and below ours emptied out at the same time, going for an absurdly cheap price, so we scooped them up. Within a day or two, my parents got a phone call. It was a family friend who'd been kicked out the country. They asked where she was, she said outside. She'd gotten back in, bravely showing up at the airport, getting detained and questioned, but ended up let back in. She was with a Syrian pastor who was heading a small school for Syrian refugee children. The landlord where they'd been kicked them out and they were looking for a new place. We had two. They grew into both apartments and eventually into ours when we left.
