Lexicon

cirrus: high, wispy clouds associated with fair weather, although in colder climates if they begin to accumulate with a steady wind they can indicate a coming blizzard
cumulonimbus: towering anvil-esque clouds with increasingly dark gray bases, a definite sign of approaching rain/hail/snow storms. wind from the clouds' direction will increase and the temperature may drop sharply
scuds: unstructured vapory clouds running before the wind mean continuing bad weather
cirrocumulus: high puffy balls of cloud in groups, indicating fair weather
cirrostratus: (altostratus) a fine umbroken layer of gray clouds. when these follow cirrus, bad weather may be in store
cumulus: puffy white clouds in a blue sky, indicating stable conditions. accumulating through the day and becoming taller and fuller they can develop into storm clouds
nimbus: flat grey clouds covering the sky, usually providing rain showers preceding bad weather
stratus: low, even, grey clouds obscuring the sky, associated with damp, dank conditions. extremely low status can form enshrouding fogs
